Teachers employed by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have been asked to work on their Teacher Performance Appraisal Development (TPAD) on time.
TSC Sub County Directors and their Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) are pushing teachers to complete the appraisal process as schools near closing and deadline approaching.
By end of next week most schools will be closed and its also the same time the Commission will be closing the online appraisal system.
According to the Commission, TPAD which is an open appraisal system will allow teachers in primary and secondary schools to participate in evaluating their own performance and initiate their professional development.
Through the appraisal and development system, it is envisaged that teachers will become more empowered to regain the lost glory of the teaching profession and public confidence and support.
TSC uses TPAD to promote its teachers. During promotion interviews teachers must download and produce evidence of TPAD compliance for them to be considered.
Teachers who fail to comply by taking the appraisal and lesson observations risk disciplinary action from the Commission.
End of last year the Commission released a research showing steady uptake of TPAD in teacher assessment.
The midline study published in October last year shows 92% of teachers reported to have been evaluated using TPAD against 89.2% reported as baseline.
The use of TPAD the study underscored has enabled the teachers to plan their lessons efficiently, identify performance gaps and provided them with an opportunity to scale up their pedagogical competencies.
It was reported that TPAD was a critical tool in enhancing efficiency in curriculum delivery.
This was evidenced by the notable proportion of teachers reporting that TPAD to a large extent influenced teacher preparation, time management and preparation and use of teaching and learning materials at 61.3%, 59.7% and 59.6% respectively.
“On pedagogy, the study revealed increased use of learner-centered methods to curriculum delivery,” the report stated.
