Teacher commits suicide by throwing himself into River Yala

A primary school teacher has committed suicide in a bizarre incident by throwing himself into River Yala. Mr Dennis Khasiani Lumasai who is a teacher at Ivono primary school in Yala is said to have taken the action following unending conflicts with his wife.

The teacher is alleged to have thrown himself in the bridge connecting Kakamega – Kisumu highway shortly after leaving his jacket in a shop in the nearby market.

Police are currently working to retrieve the body and have also launched an investigation to find out the reasons behind the incident.

Last month the teachers medical insurance provider AON Minet released a report over rising cases of teacher depressions reported in its accredited facilities.

The report highlighted a significant number of teachers suffering from mental health problems.

Most of those affected were teachers in public schools. According to AON Minet approximately four hundred teachers visited health facilities in that month and were classified to be suffering from depression.

Counties of Bungoma, Nairobi, Bomet and Machakos recorded the highest number of teachers suffering from the mental health.

Bungoma county had twenty eight cases followed by Nairobi at twenty four then Bungoma with twenty three and lastly Machakos with twenty cases.

Other areas that reported cases include Usin Gishu, Pokot, Mandera and Marsabit each recording one case.

Majority of the patients were male with fifty four percent while twenty nine percent were femaile and seventy percent were under the unknown category.

The report showed that the main cause of the depression was stress and anxiety.
