Private schools fail to recall teachers due to financial constraints

Some private learning institutions are yet to recall their teachers ahead of expected reopening next month.

Managers of the institutions said that unlike teachers in public schools who reported to work yesterday, they were yet to recall their employees due to financial constraints.

“We have not recalled our employees because we lack funds to pay for them. We are waiting for the government to announce definite reopening dates before we contact our teachers,” said Johannes Menjo, the proprietor of Roseeve Academy in Kapsabet.

Menjo, who is also the chairman of Nandi branch of Kenya Private Schools Association, said they were not sure whether parents will bring back their children due to financial difficulties.

“We urge the government to speed up release of the promised Sh7 billion soft loan to private schools to enable them to buy essentials and prepare infrastructure that will enable them to meet Covid-19 protocols as required by Ministry of Health,” he said.

Lessos Education Centre manager Mary Tanui said they are ready to receive pupils.

“Although we are struggling with limited resources, we have done renovations and enhanced water supply to ensure all Covid-19 protocols are observed once pupils report back,” said Tanui.

A principal who spoke on condition of anonymity said it will be a tall order to implement protocols without government releasing funds to schools. “Without funds from government, it will be a challenge to manage institutions,” he said.

Paul Rotich, Kuppet Secretary Nandi said: “Teachers are ready for teaching but institutions are ill-prepared with poor infrastructure and lack of Personal Protective Equipment.”
