Young parliamentarians push for payment of BOM teachers salaries

Addressing the Press in Nairobi yesterday, MPs under the banner Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) said the teachers had waited for too long and it was time they got their dues.

In early August, the teachers were given a ray of hope by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang after the ministry asked for the particulars of those employed by public schools for verification.

That process, according to Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, is complete.

“The latest information is that the list of BoM teachers has been verified and 43,000 are due to be paid. The funds have already been cleared for release,” she said.

The teachers, who are paid by their respective schools’ BoM have gone without salaries after the schools were shut in March.“It is more than a month since the president ordered these teachers to be paid. It’s really unfortunate that to date no tangible excuse can be given as to why they have not yet been paid,” said Lesuuda.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino threatened a demonstration next week should the State fail to pay the teachers.
