Why Magoha wants to meet Knut officials on Tuesday

A meeting between Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha and Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials has scheduled for Tuesday next week in a bid to end ongoing wrangles in the Education sector.

The meeting aims at ending the tussle over the implementation of the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Speaking in Bomet of Saturday, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said the union is prepared to engage the Prof. Magoha over implementation of the CBC.

He insisted that KNUT will demand the reinstatement of the 160 teachers who were interdicted for boycotting or disrupting training sessions on the new curriculum.

“We are meeting Magoha on Tuesday and precisely at 3pm. We are not going for tea… Magoha should tell us in that meeting that TSC has lifted interdiction of all those teachers because TSC and Government have got a hand,” said Sossion.

He added: “You cannot roll out the curriculum using the police… Curriculum is rolled out professionally through the correct process.”

While Magoha has continuously defended the government’s push to deliver the CBC, KNUT has opposed the move saying the implementation process is unconstitutional.

Last week TSC announced the interdiction of 160 teachers among them 10 union officials for boycotting or disrupting training on the  competency-based curriculum last month.

This move by TSC got KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion breathing fire.

“An injury to one is an injury to all… This is a matter that we are going to take a very stern action against TSC… It is an act of provocation on the union since its inception in 1957,” said Sossion last Wednesday

In a letter copied to Education CS Prof. George Magoha, CS Labor Ukur Yattan and COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, Sossion faulted TSC for taking an action he says violates the rights of union members.
