ECDE teachers have protested the continued use of the term ‘caregivers’ to refer to them anytime county governments advertise for employment.
The teachers are pissed off by the latest job advertisement by Murang’a county which has announced recruitment of 75 caregivers.
They say they are trained professionals and counties should stop using derogatory terms when seeking their services.
Instead they say should be referred to as ECDE teachers or simply teachers.
Murang’a county is not the only county which has used the term ‘caregivers’ to refer to ECDE teachers other counties including the recent ones Nakuru and Nyamira counties which shortlisted the teachers for interviews.
However some objected saying there is no problem so long as the counties pay them good salaries and allowancies.
“I don’t think its a big deal. Whats in a name, so long as they pay us well I don’t think its such an issue,” said Simon Kioko, ECDE teacher in Kibwezi.
Starting this month ECDE teachers will start to enjoy good pay after an agreement by Council of Governors (CoG).
The governors, complying to an order by the Senate, created a new scheme of service for paying ECDE teachers which take effect this month or latest July.
The Senate Education committee report had said 23 counties have not initiated any process to implement an existing scheme of service for early childhood development education teachers (ECDE).
The committee said only eight counties have fully implemented the scheme of service while 16 have partially done so.
“The 23 counties have not initiated any process to implement the scheme of service. They pay ECDE teachers’ stipend with most of the teachers paid by parents,” said Alice Milgo, who chaired the committee.
Ms Milgo said out of the 42,700 teachers employed by county governments, 13,502 are permanently employed while 28,300 are on contract.
However the governors dropped a scheme of service created by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) after conducting a job evaluation with other stakeholders including TSC and CoG and came with their own.
