Teaching Practice for P1 Diploma Upgraders start to come to an end

Teaching Practice for P1 Diploma Upgraders start to come to an end

Some schools have already started to release the trainee teachers who have been in teaching practice (TP) since the beginning of this third term.

A number of schools in Coast and Eastern regions have released the teachers after successfully carrying out the practicum.

The Ministry of Education had issued a circular on 4th November requiring school heads of the TP schools to give clearance report of the trainee teachers.

The trainees had their external assessments courtesy of Knec which ran upto 4th November. According to the circular the trainees are to remain in their TP schools until the end of the third term.

The trainee teachers who are the first cohorts to upgrade from Primary Teacher Education (PTE) to Diploma Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) will also have their results ready by December this year.

They will also be awarded their certificates after completing their full term teaching practice.

The results will also include the Knec assessments they did from 15th July to 20th July 2022.

A taskforce had recommended both P1 and ECDE teachers to undergo the mandatory training to be at par with the demand of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). The training of the first cohorts started in October last year.

The second cohorts started in September this year. According to a circular dated 6th October 2022 sent to TTC Principals, only eight TTCs are to be used to train the teachers this year due to the low enrollment.

Due to the low number of P1 teachers who applied for upgrading the Ministry of Education, Principal Secretary, ordered placement of students to be merged into eight colleges.

The PS asked the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to redistribute the students in the eight colleges as follows;

  1. Murang’a TTC for Meru, Egoji and Kigari TTCs
  2. Machakos TTC for Kitui, Kilimambogo and Garissa TTCs
  3. Kericho TTC for Tambach, Baringo and Mosoriot TTCs
  4. Asumbi TTC for Migori and Kenyenya TTCs
  5. Kaimosi TTC for Eregi, Seme, Bondo, Ugenya, Bunyore, Bishop Mahon and Chesta TTCs
  6. Shanzu TTC for Galana and Kwale TTCs
  7. Aberdare TTC for Narok TTC
  8. Thogoto TTC for Kamwenja TTC

The third cohorts will start their training in April 2023 after its application ended in 18th August.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will employ 30,000 teachers starting January 2022.

P1 teachers who have successfully upgraded their certificates to Diploma will have an upper hand in this upcoming TSC mass recruitment.

TSC recruitment score sheet shows that the teachers will be have more marks because of upgrading their certificates.

The teachers will have ten marks for presenting evidence of CBC Diploma Upgrade certificate.

TSC in its Framework plans to end recruitment of PTE teachers in the year 2024 and replace it with DPTE as the minimum entry to teaching profession.

Many P1 teachers are yet to join the program citing high cost of training. The teachers are looking forward for employment despite failing to upgrade.
