Schools are heading for closure. Primary and secondary schools will close by next week according to a revised calendar released by Ministry of Education.
Schools will have a three week holiday from 5th August to 23rd August 2024. The learners will resume learning on 26th August.
Third term will have nine weeks running from 26th August to 25th October 2024.
Already a number of secondary schools have closed and sent their learners home to start their holiday.
The reopening of schools for second term was disrupted by the heavy el nino rains that wrecked havoc by flooding schools and destroying structures.
Following the destructions and the huge risk posed by the floods, the then Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, postponed the reopening by two weeks.
Second term had fourteen weeks but the two lost weeks were never recovered according to the new calendar that was released.
The former CS asked teachers to complete the syllabus and second term activities within the remaining twelve weeks.
The Principal Secretary for basic education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, issued a circular showing new revised dates for schools.
Half term break which was to start on 20th to 23rd June 2024 was pushed to start from 26th to 28th June 2024.
In the calendar all pre-primary, primary and secondary schools are supposed to close by 2nd July 2024.
Majority of primary schools are set to close on Wednesday and Thursday next week. Many of them are completing their end term exams this week.
Primary and junior schools were also carrying out the Competency Based Assessment (CBA) projects.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has given schools till 26th July to ensure all learner project scores are uploaded onto the online platform.
