KEMI to Issue Certificates to Headteachers and Principals After Management Training

The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) will issue certificates to headteachers and principals who successfully attend its education management training programmes.

The certification will recognize school administrators who have undergone specialized training sessions organized by KEMI, typically held during school holidays in April and August.

The programmes are designed to strengthen leadership and management capacity in schools, particularly in line with the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

According to KEMI, the training has focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively manage institutions under the new curriculum framework.

A key component of the programme has been the use of the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS), a digital platform aimed at enhancing data-driven decision-making, improving institutional accountability, and promoting efficient education management practices.

Following the official rollout of the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) in January 2026, Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok lauded the platform as a transformative milestone for the country’s digital infrastructure.

This new platform is designed to replace the aging National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), which Bitok described as too rigid and difficult to integrate with other departments.

Unlike its predecessor, KEMIS will act as an all-encompassing digital hub, unifying data from basic education, universities, TVETs, and agencies like the TSC and KNEC to provide a seamless record of every learner’s academic progress.

KEMI Launches Nationwide Online Training for Primary and Junior School Heads

At the same time the Kenya Education Management Institute has initiated a massive nationwide mobilization of Heads of Institutions (HOIs) for Primary and Junior Schools to undergo specialized training on the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS).

The initiative, aimed at streamlining digital data management in schools, marks a significant shift toward virtual capacity building for school administrators across the country.

Urgent Deadline for Registration

In a circular signed by KEMI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Maurice Odondo, the institute had set a strict timeline for the exercise.

All school heads were required to submit their professional details through an official KEMI portal by April 30, 2026.

The registration process is a prerequisite for the training, which officially kicked off on May 4, 2026.

Driving KEMIS Implementation

The primary goal of this program is the efficient implementation of the KEMIS platform, which is designed to replace older systems with a more agile, data-driven approach to education management.

Dr. Odondo emphasized that this training is vital for the system’s success, urging County Education offices to support the exercise.

Regional officials were tasked with ensuring that every school head within their jurisdiction registers before the deadline to avoid being left out of the digital transition.

Key Takeaways for School Heads

  • Target Group: HOIs of Primary and Junior Schools.
  • Platform: Virtual/Online Training.
  • Deadline to Register: April 30, 2026.
  • Start Date: May 4, 2026.

By prioritizing this digital upgrade, KEMI aims to ensure that school leaders are fully equipped to handle institutional accountability and data-driven decision-making in line with current Ministry of Education reforms.

Through the initiative, school heads are expected to better utilize data in planning, monitoring performance, and making informed administrative decisions within their institutions.

KEMI Chief Executive Officer, Maurice Odondo, reaffirmed the institutes commitment to strengthening leadership in the education sector, noting that the certification process will play a key role in professionalizing school management and aligning it with modern, data-driven approaches.
