Diploma in Special Needs Education (SNE), fee and application requirements

Diploma in Special Needs Education (SNE) takes two year study period. It is offered by accredited colleges whch offer Knec exams that is recognized by various bodies including TSC.

The Kenya Institute of Special Needs Education (KISE) is in charge of providing the training.

The course is implemented on school based sessions in various training centres across the country.

Some of the KISE centres include Shimo La Tewa High School, Kericho TTC, Eregi TTC, Migori TTC and KISE Main Campus.

To apply for training as a Special Need Education (SNE) teacher on school based programme go to application.kise.ac.ke and place application.

To qualify for Diploma in SNE inservice programme one must be a teacher registered by TSC and have served for at least two years.

The Diploma courses offered by accredited colleges are; Diploma in SNE in: Autism, Emotional and Behaviour Difficulties, Hearing Impairment, Deafblind, Intellectual Disabilities, Gifted and Talented, Visual Impairment, Physical Disabilities, Learning Disabilities and Inclusive Education.

After one year of study the trainee teachers will have a national assessment courtesy of Knec.

The mid course Knec assessment is done in April and is done electronically also called e-assessment (electronic assessment).

The mid course assessment is key and teacher trainees are expected to pass or get a referal.

Trainee teachers are required to have a high end laptop for the assessment.

Knec listed the gadget to have the following minimum specifications;

1) Licenced Windows 10 version 22H2 and above;
2) 14-inch screen (minimum resolution 1920×1080);
3) Integrated Webcam;
4) HDD 256gb SSD;
5) Memory 8gb;
6) Core i3 gen 6 and above;
7) Internal Battery that can last for more than 3 hrs
8) IEEE 802.11 Wireless capability (ac,g or n).

Principals of the registered Diploma Teacher Training Colleges are also required to ensure availability of stable internet connectivity and power supply.
