Knut, Kuppet miss out in July pay deal for teachers

Teachers unions Knut, Kuppet and Kusnet are missing out in the latest salary increment plan for teachers.

TSC teachers together with civil servants will get a salary increment in their July pay. They will get a salary increment of between 7% and 10%.

Making the revelation on Friday, President William Ruto said this is to cushion public servants from the harsh economic times.

“I know there is a proposal by SRC for the increase of salaries of different cadres of both civil servants and other public servants. So our teachers, policemen, military space, and those working in government, we have agreed that from tomorrow your salaries will be adjusted between 7 and 10 percent,” Ruto said during the launch of the new e-citizen platform at KICC.

However the three teachers unions, which have been in the forefront when striking pay deal for teachers, will not be in the table when decisions for salary changes are made.

In fact the salary changes will solely be done by Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Teachers unions benefit immensely when they initiate a pay deal. Knut and Kuppet had started talks with TSC on revising the 2021-2025 CBA but the talks hit a snag.

When TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia appeared before Parliament in May she said the Commission needs Sh56 billion over the next four years starting July 2023 to raise salaries for teachers from job group B5 to D5.

“The commission negotiated a non-monetary 2021-2025 CBA with the teacher unions pursuant to the advisory from the Salaries Review Commission. It was agreed that the CBA be reviewed mid-term if the economic situation would improve in the country,” Dr Macharia told members of the National Assembly Education and Research Committee chaired by Julius Melly.

Macharia said in order for teachers to be motivated in their work they need sh14 billion each year for salary increment.

“The Commission would wish to review the 2021-2025 CBA, more specifically the salary component with an aim to motivate teachers under the employment of the Commission.” She added.

“Accordingly, we request this Committee to support the Commission get Sh14 billion per year for four years to cater for the same.”

In the talks that TSC had started with teachers unions, Knut had proposed a 60% salary increment while Kuppet wanted 42% salary increment for teachers to be paid in July.
