Secondary schools are expected to receive money to run the institutions next week after the Ministry of Education and National Treasury reached a deal to disburse capitation funds.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang assured public school principals that the money would be wired to bank accounts.
The PS made the remarks during the launch of the Sh60 million Uasin Gishu ECDE milk programme at Central Primary School in Eldoret town.
The event hosted by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii was attended by former West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo who is the chairperson of the North Rift Water Works Development Agency.
Kipsang was reacting to complaints by the principals over delay to release capitation funds.
The principals have complained that they had not received the free day secondary education funds.
Led by Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairperson Indimuli Kahi, the principals said schools were in debt and were surviving on the mercy of suppliers. “If the suppliers get tired of waiting for payment and refuse to supply, schools will be grounded,” Kahi was quoted as saying.
Bii said his administration has put in place measures to ensure the milk programme he has unveiled is going to be sustained. “The milk feeding programme for ECDE pupils is sustainable across the county and there should be no cause for worry.”
