A section of unemployed primary school teachers are calling on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to exercise fairness during teacher recruitment.
The teachers want TSC to follow year of graduation from Teacher Training Colleges (TSC) in all its recruitment exercise.
The teachers have protested after TSC released a scoresheet that put teachers who graduated in their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) in the year 2015 and before in the same basket.
According to TSC scoresheet it released in July, teachers who graduated in the year 2015 and earlier have been awarded 35 marks.
Those who graduated in 2016 were awarded 30 marks, 2017 awarded 25 marks, 2018 awarded 20 marks, 2019 awarded 15 marks, 2020 awarded 10 marks and 2021 and after warded 5 marks.
The protesting teachers fault the scoresheet saying a teacher who graduated in 2010 cannot be awarded same marks with those who graduated in 2015.
Other criteria the Commission used for awarding scores include; the PTE points the teacher scored, internship evidence and whether the teachers upgraded his/her studies and was awarded the CBC upgrade certificate.
TSC will publish on its website names of teachers who will be successfully shortlisted in the ongoing recruitment.
TSC said it will publish the shortlisted candidates on its website from Wednesday 13th July, 2022 to Friday 15th July, 2022
In the advert the Commission seeks to recruit a total 14,460 primary and secondary school teachers as well as Teacher Training College (TTC) tutors by July.
Currently TSC has a total of 345,316 teachers on its payroll. Of these, 228,126 are primary school teachers, 116,024 are secondary school teachers and 1,166 are TTC tutors.
TSC is currently grappling with massive shortage of teachers. The Commission requires a total 114,581 teachers to plug the shortage.
There are at least 300,000 teachers who are trained but are yet to be employed by the Commission.
TSC however employs at least 10,000 teachers annually which is too small compared to existing shortage as well as 10,000 teachers who exit the service each year.
Some of the employed teachers serve as interns for a period of one year which is renewable. The Commission employs 6,000 teachers on internship each year.
In this July recruitment, TSC gave interested and qualified candidates till 7th July, to apply for the advertised vacancies.

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia listed the following minimum recruitment requirements for the advertised posts.
A) SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
To qualify for recruitment, a candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:
i) Be a Kenyan citizen;
ii) Must be a holder of at least a diploma in education;
iii) Must be a registered teacher with Teachers Service Commission.
B) TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGES
To qualify for recruitment, a candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:
i) Be a Kenyan citizen;
ii) Must be a holder of at least a Bachelors degree in Education;
iii) Must be a registered teacher with Teachers Service Commission.
C) PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
To qualify for recruitment, a candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:
i) Be a Kenyan citizen;
ii) Must be a holder of a PI certificate;
iii) Must be a registered teacher with the Teachers Service Commission.
its very unfair for us who graduated in 2010 and before to be given same marks as those who graduated in 2015 or 2014 and even 2013 or 2012. TSC is just promoting corruption by itself because there is no order, there are some teachers who graduated in 2015, 2016 and are already in service yet us who are less fortunate who graduate in 2010 and before are not yet employed and yet they assume that they had employed us long time ago and now just dealing with those who graduated in 2015 and there is no hope for us at all, The Union is only bargaining for the teachers in service. Its true that we are voiceless but Madam CEO Nancy Macharia please come for our rescue we are also Kenyans, Why MUST we suffer this much , please madam place us in your shoes so that you can feel what we are going through its a lot Madam Kindly employ us we are also Kenyans who underwent the same course that those who are employed went to PLEASE EMPLOY US I BEG YOU MADAM.
TSC kindly consider our year of graduation during recruitment , or let us know if you don’t want to employ us . 12 years without employment we are really suffering, we are depressed so much Kindly Madam Nancy Macharia hear our cry we are suffering.
