Final Stretch: TSC in Final Verification Stage for Over 14,000 Teachers to Receive Prestigious ‘Wajibika Award’
NAIROBI, Kenya — The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is currently in the final stages of a nationwide verification exercise to identify and honor more than 14,000 educators who have displayed exemplary academic excellence and unwavering ethical leadership.
The recognition, centered on the “Wajibika Award,” is a high-level initiative aligned with the Public Service Commission’s mandate to celebrate public servants who embody the values of integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Rigorous Selection Criteria
The selection process has been exceptionally stringent, utilizing a data-driven approach to ensure that only the most dedicated professionals are feted.
According to a circular dated May 4, 2026, signed by TSC Acting CEO Ms. Evaleen Jesang Mitei, the Commission utilized a multi-layered evaluation framework:
TPAD Consistency: Shortlisted teachers were required to maintain a TPAD score of 95% or above for six consecutive terms, covering the period from Term 2, 2024, to Term 1, 2026.
Performance Metrics: The Commission integrated Performance Contracting data alongside national examination results (KCSE/KCPE) as the primary benchmarks for nomination.
Administrative Accountability: Heads of Institutions (HOIs) were required to show a performance evaluation score of 90% or above for three consecutive years, while simultaneously keeping institutional pending bills below a 5% threshold.
Verification and Submission
Following the initial screening, Regional Directors were tasked with validating the academic performance of these nominees.
Specifically, shortlisted teachers were required to submit the mean scores of their best-performing subjects across three consecutive years (2023, 2024, and 2025) to provide a verifiable track record of consistent instructional quality.

Recognizing Institutional Excellence
Beyond individual recognition, the Wajibika Award seeks to celebrate schools that have become beacons of effective governance. Regional Directors were instructed to nominate one secondary and one primary school per jurisdiction based on:
Ethical Governance: Demonstrated measures promoting accountability and integrity.
Resource Management: Effective stewardship of institutional funds and assets.
Academic Stewardship: Structured planning, consistent teacher engagement, and continuous learner assessment.
Learner Welfare: Exceptional commitment to the safety and holistic wellbeing of students.
A New Standard for the Service
This initiative marks a significant shift in how the Commission manages the teaching workforce. By tying awards to both ethical conduct and pedagogical outcomes, the TSC is signaling that it no longer views academic scores in isolation from professional integrity.
“The Award seeks to recognize teachers and administrators who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability within the teaching service,” Ms. Mitei noted in the communication to the field.
With the verification window having closed following the May 8th deadline, the Commission is now finalizing the final list of the 14,000+ awardees.
For a service sector often scrutinized for administrative challenges, the Wajibika Award serves as a morale-boosting celebration of the thousands of educators working quietly to maintain excellence in classrooms across the country.
