ADVISORY ON EDUCATION DEGREE AND TSC REQUIREMENTS
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has revised the academic qualifications required for individuals intending to pursue a degree in education.
To avoid future disappointments, kindly take note of the following updated requirements and share this information with young people interested in the teaching profession:
- REQUIREMENTS FOR A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN EDUCATION
Minimum Grades:
B- in both Mathematics and English.
C+ in the teaching subjects of interest.
C+ as the overall mean grade in KCSE.
BRIDGING COURSES:
Bridging courses will not be accepted to meet these requirements.
PREVIOUS REQUIREMENT:
Previously, candidates needed a minimum of C+ as an overall mean grade and C+ in the teaching subjects.
- REQUIREMENTS FOR A DIPLOMA IN SECONDARY TEACHER EDUCATION (DSTE):
Minimum Grades:
D+ in Mathematics.
C in English.
C+ as the overall mean grade in KCSE.
- IMPORTANT ADVISORY:
Do not enroll for education courses without meeting the above requirements, as you will not qualify for a TSC registration number upon graduation.
Be cautious, as some universities may still offer education courses to students who do not meet the stipulated qualifications due to negligence.
Such graduates will face challenges obtaining their TSC numbers.
- FOR GRADUATES WITHOUT TSC NUMBERS:
Graduates who completed their education degree or diploma under the previous requirements but have not yet obtained a TSC number are strongly advised to apply for it immediately.
Delays in processing the TSC number could result in complications with the new changes being implemented.
TSC displays a confused leadership. Keeps on introducing new unreasonable changes by instincts. Eg what does a history teacher have to do with a B- in mathematics???. It’s absurdly that they halted promotions based on academic qualifications yet are still emphatic om the grades.
TSC should know that it’s these erratic decisions that they do make and that’s why we have teachers who have served so well for over 30 years and the best they can be is being deputy principals of their students who are the principal.Last year 2023 they rewarded those teachers who excelled in co- curriculum activities at the East Africa Games by giving them promotions, this time TSC has decided to remain quiet
This is too much, B- is not a joke
Misguided decision. Should have consulted further.
Teachers are not being paid well and you are busy hiking the qualifications. You guys will be teachers in future
NONESENSE of the year..If I may with all the due respect; of what importance is mathematics to a teacher of CRE ?
NONESENSE of the year..If I may with all the due respect; of what importance is mathematics to a teacher of CRE ?
Hey bro,y attack tsc for nothing, there just doing their work,n yes, mathematics is important to everyone even an Islamic teacher.Mind ur words
Will it affect students yet to graduate or those already enrolled in training?
My question will those students who had already joined campuses with the previous requirements be affected?
Will this affect teachers yet to graduate
I am a third year student pursuing BED ARTS , I had a C+ …so it means that I will not acquire TSC Numbers?
My question too
Still in old curriculum
It would have been in order for such a directive to be enforced before the recent admissions to higher institutions of learning. Most education students will be destabilised by such
This is not for quality improvement purposes but simply to act as an entry barrier. All lucrative professions try as much as possible to institute entry barriers. For the next foreseeable future, teaching will remain as one of the most “employable profession” in Kenya. A beautiful lady with many potential suiters will always “feel sweet” and keep herself beyond reach for the “common suiter”.
What is B- in maths for a cre teacher
Even B- in English for a math chemistry teacher is he going to teach chem or English?
Sioni hii ikifanya kazi
Otherwise according to my understanding
Ni wale wanaingia saa ii not the continuing one
Consider those who have been teaching jss..too they are capable besides the diploma or degree course..
TSC also had changed the grades for entry in p1 diploma, and later changed due to lack of quorum. In this we are waiting.
Teachers are not being paid well and you are busy hiking the qualifications. Now What is importance of mathematics to a teacher of a Kiswahili, English ,History & IRE/CRE ?
What! Ostensibly,a meagre of eligible students will pursue B.ed in Kenya and make teaching profession a preserve for a few.
This will not help to solve the teacher shortage witnessed in our schools through our the country now that jss is in place
If that’s the case with heightening the grade, why are jss schools manned by Pte HOIs whereas degree graduate trs are a commonplace?
Let the old wazees and mama’s stop their out dated decisions
This requirements are permissive even those who came up with the requirements majority did not score B- in Maths
With this, majority of those who want to be teachers will go for diploma course
What about those already enrolled, more so first years who don’t meet the new adustment. What’s your take on them and what really are you up to?
What I will comment is that the teacher service commission to be honest and transparent and be the one who shows or enlighten to the other organisation what we refer to equality in all of their task in the great country of kenya
What of the students who had joined campuses with the previous requirements and have already had classes and paid the fees what will be their fate?
Will these affect those who are already in university with previous qualifications.what will happen to those who joined last year and don’t qualify for this but had qualified the previous one
It’s a barrier that is going to lock out would be teachers for other subjects like CRE/HRE /IRE, ART, HISTORY, Music.
TSC should just let people persue what they are good at.
Will it affect the current first years or whom does it begin with?
Another devil after CPG that killed the teaching profession. The president should interven otherwise this lady will make the teaching profession usefulness and Mark u the country will miss teachers in the next few yrs if those irrelevant policies are allowed to take on course
I had done diploma in secondary education with a minimum grade of C plain and C+in teaching subjects and I didn’t get Tsc number will I get now if I apply
All this requirements
n the pay is so low,,
Am still asking the same question
I did KCSE in 2007 ..can I join education since I got a mean grade of c plain had E in mathematics???
Tsc , is this fake or . Make official announcement regarding this.
Very soon Kenya will have one career that no one will have no interest in ‘Teaching,’.
Teachers are undermined, underpaid, yet on demand but demanded of high qualifications for the undermined course.
Will the gen z have an interest for such,I doubt, you Will employ robots for your demands

My concern is that they are requesting those who have graduated to treat application of tsc numbers as agent.
Is it going to affect those who are yet to graduate but are already teacher trainees?
Nonsense
This is not fair every year changes and this is even hurting since only last year math and English were not at all required why hiking so soon why not introduced gradually eg c plain.we call parliament to summon TSC on this matter
We will challenge this at the court of law
Draw the line , what of those already enrolled in the universities . will they be affected with the amendments?
Good
What then would be the requirements for a diploma in Primary Teacher Education
( DPTE) ? The Commission needs to come clear on every course and/ or training concerning education. Teachers want to up their study but TSC is simply creating a barrier.
Fake news..!?
I think they’re trying to curb the no of unemployed teachers
What about those already enrolled and doing Education without these cut off points?
So unfair, these changes should take place in like 4 yrs time ,watu waandamane
They don’t want any more teachers in the market. The target is to avoid overflow.
What a great qualitications
Train teachers on areas of interest, why force the would be teachers to have B- in maths when they don’t intend to be maths teacher. Don’t ruin the profession as was with technical areas which has now passed a challenge in the sector.
Right now I’m pursuing bachelor in education arts in my first year.I have less qualifications named above in mathematics. What t do you advise me.
Sisemi kitu…only God knows the future of Education in Kenya.
What about those already enrolled
What of registered teachers who only meets entry requirements but not mathematics but wish to advance
What of registered teachers who only meets entry requirements but not mathematics but wish to advance
Huo ni ujinga mtupu!!!!!!!!!!!
Huo ni ujinga mtupu!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder whether those making such changes went to school….,B- in maths for a Kiswahili/ CRE teachers,if you want to kill education in Kenya with name of policy making so be it…. Nonsense 😞
The giant teachers employer is messing with the teaching profession. Some decisions require sold fact based grounds to implement.
One person cannot present and effect views that in reality choke human life. One who sits in a position of authority should not work on impulse.

This is but just an imagination, soon no one will be interested in teaching for a job.
A question on the current students who are ready enrolled in the course without meeting the requirements. What are they going to do
I thought the Teachers service commission has a Board of management that occasionally seats and deliberates on policy matters. An impulsive decision such as the one issued by the secretary has a negative effect in the teaching profession. It demotivates and kill career prospects. The impact it causes on young men and women aspiring to become professional teachers is disheartening. Why can’t TSC improve on its environments, both internal and external! I want to believe the human resource policies and professional scale on teachers entry point and exit parameters calls for a sober mind to sustain and grow the profession in kenya. Why are TSC decision making taken haphazardly? Why are decisions unpopular with stakeholders?
Iron of cbc curriculum
Mm where are the researchers to tell us what is the meaning of this. I think they want to reduces job scales in future . They want to pay up to deploma level c2.

Let’s stop being mean with a public office you havest what you people are sowing, the awkwardness when a woman leads
It’s very sad that tsc recruitment has been left at the mercy & the hands of politicians who issue the employment letters in funerals. Each & everytime teachers are being invited to attend verification processes whose fate is not known. At the queue you are around 600 jobless teachers waiting to be absorbed & only to be told that, ” We only need 3 teachers who had previously served as interns. ” Are there moles in tsc ? Is tsc really concerned with the welfare of teachers who graduated 10 years ago myself included aren’t in service while those who graduated in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021… are already in payrolls ? It’s a very sad state of affairs in a country called Kenya !!!!
What about those who enrolled in the institution before the changes
Am still asking the same question
This is true enquire from the university an see the truth
Hope this is not fake news
