Teachers countrywide have applauded President William Ruto for his consistency in mitigating teacher unemployment and career stagnation.
This follows the recent advertisement by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that has listed over 44,000 teaching jobs.
Ruto unlike his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta has been consistent in hiring and promoting teachers massively.
Each financial year, an average of 20,000 teachers have been promoted. Also a record number of teachers have been hired both locally and abroad.
In 2023 a total of 46,000 teachers were hired on internship terms. These were 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school intern teachers who were recruited in February 2023.
450 secondary school intern teachers recruited in April 2023. 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school intern teachers recruited in September 2023.
The teachers have, since January 2025, been absorbed into TSC payroll on permanent and pensionable (pnp) terms.
In addition at least 10,000 primary school teachers were deployed to work in junior schools.
TSC also recruited 20,000 teachers on internship terms in January this year to support learning in junior secondary.
This was revealed by the Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi who said the teachers will be converted to permanent terms in January 2026.
Treasury CS John Mbadi has since said the teachers will be confirmed on pnp terms at a cost of Sh5.4 billion in January 2026.
In the current advert released on 12th August, TSC has declared 24,000 teacher internship vacancies in junior secondary schools and 21,313 promotion vacancies.
Interested candidates, who meet the required qualifications have been given till Monday, 25th August 2025 midnight to submit their applications online through the TSC portal — www.teachersonline.go.ke.

So far Ruto’s government has employed a total of 76,000 teachers who are currently on TSC payroll.
Upon successful conclusion of this JSS interns recruitment, the Kenya Kwanza government will boast of employing a record 100,000 teachers since its inception the biggest ever to be witnessed since independence.
Ruto has also exported unemployed teachers to work abroad in a programme dubbed ‘Mwalimu Majuu’.
The teachers are exported to work in oversee countries which include USA, Ireland, Germany, France, Canada, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, China, Kuwait, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Botswana.
For unemployed teachers seeking to fill the 24,000 teacher internship vacancies in junior schools, TSC gave till Midnight of 9th September, 2025 for submission of online applications.

VACANCIES FOR TEACHER INTERNS IN JUNIOR SCHOOLS AUGUST, 2025
The Teachers Service Commission invites applications from qualified candidates to fill 24,000 teacher internship posts in Junior Schools to support the implementation of Competency Based Curriculum.
Interested and qualified candidates should submit their applications online through the Commission’s website, www.tsc.go.ke under “Careers’ or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke not later than Midnight of 9th September, 2025.
JUNIOR SCHOOL TEACHER INTERNS
To quality for recruitment, a candidate should meet the following minimum requirements:
i) Be a Kenyan citizen;
ii) Must be a holder of at least a diploma in education with a minimum mean Grade of C+ (plus) and C+ (plus) in two teaching subjects in KCSE or its equivalent.
iii) Must be a registered teacher with Teachers Service Commission.

GENERAL INFORMATION
i) The Teachers Service Commission’s Guidelines for Recruitment of Teacher Interns 2025/2026 Financial Year shall apply.
ii) Manual applications will not be considered
iii) Be unemployed and has no record of exiting teaching service with the Commission due to disciplinary grounds;
iv) Candidates will be requited to present original academic and professional certificates.
v) Must have personal Accident Insurance cover for personal risks during the internship period
vi) Selection of Candidates will strictly be on merit and based on the number of vacancies per County
vii) Successful candidates must not fill more than one offer of internship
viii) Successful candidates will be posted to serve to any junior school in the sub-county where they were interviewed or in any part of the County where the vacancy exist
ix) Successful candidates shall be required to teach various learning areas under Junior School Curriculum

NOTE
The Teacher Internship Programme is a one (1) year programme meant to equip and sustain competencies of persons entering the teaching service.
The programme targets unemployed registered teachers to be assigned to learning institutions where their teaching experience will be enhanced through mentorship, coaching and exposure to practical teaching experience
DURATION OF INTERNSHIP
The Internship period will be for twerve (12) months
MONTHLY STIPEND FOR TEACHER INTERNS
This is not a remunerative engagement. However, interns attached to Junior schools will be eligible for monthly stipend of Kshs 20,000.
The stipend will be paid subject to statutory deductions. where applicable.
