Knut writes to TSC to cancel or they boycott CBC training on Madaraka Day

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has sent a warning to Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that it will not take the issue of training teachers on Madaraka Day lightly.

Through its Secretary General Wilson Sossion, the union has threatened some actions including asking its members to boycott the training should TSC fail to comply by rescheduling the training of teachers on a holiday.

Yesterday teachers were shocked to learn that the Commission has no intention of rescheduling Day 2 of the training.

The teachers were told to attend the Day 2 of training on Tueday (today) as this was planned and there is no plan to interrupt the schedule.

The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) training started yesterday targetting at least three teachers in each public primary school.

The three teachers required to attend the program which is scheduled to take five days are;

i. School head teacher

ii. 1 lower primary school teacher

iii. 1 upper primary school teacher

Knut wants TSC to allow teachers attend the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Below is the letter Sossion wrote to TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia.

RE: SCHEDULING OF TEACHER TRAINING ON 1st OF JUNE 2021 (MADARAKA DAY)

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has been drawn to the attention that Teachers Service  Commission (TSC) for unexplained reason(s) has scheduled teacher trainings on 1st of June, 2021.

This is to remind the Commission that 1st June is a nationally gazetted holiday (Madaraka Day) that entitles even Kenyan Citizen to participate in the celebrations.

Teachers have over the years participated in Madaraka Day celebrations since independence and therefore they should be granted the freedom to fully participate from various parts of the county.

This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations are scheduled to be held in Kisumu

County and teachers should be at liberty to follow His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta’s address from the comfort of their homes or hereer they choose to be.

By a copy of this  letter you are advised to cancel any activities  scheduled for 1st of June, 2021 failure to which we shall advice our members to boycott the training and proceed to enjoy Madaraka day.

Be advised.

Yours sincerely,

HON. WILSON SOSSION
SECRETARY-GENERAL K.N.U.T

Last year during a similar training Knut protested after TSC planned training of teachers on Sunday.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) wrote to TSC to reschedule the CBC training to avoid conflict over Saturday and Sundays which are popularly known as religious days.

Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion said TSC should reschedule CBC training to another date apart from Saturday and Sunday.

“You are aware of the National Constitution and the right to worship by all citizens and considering that we are in a festive season where members are engaging in religious activies on Saturdays and Sundays. We therefore demand that you reschedule any training activities to any other day other than Saturdays and Sundays,’ said Sossin in a letter addressed to TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia.

However teachers proceeded with training despite the protests.
