THE KENYA NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL
‘On the Frontline in Quality Assessment and Examinations’
Nairobi, Tuesday, January 10, 2023
PRESS STATEMENT
MARKING OF THE 2023 KENYA CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION EXAMINATION
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) wishes to inform the country that the marking exercise of the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Examination is going on smoothly in all the 35 centres.
However, on Tuesday, 10th January 2023, some examiners at one of the centres where marking of Christian Religious Education Paper I is currently taking place attempted to disrupt the exercise over claims that they were unhappy with the ‘‘strict’’ marking regime imposed by the Centre’s Chief Examiner.
The Council authorities, upon consultations, agreed to replace the Chief Examiner as a compromise to ensure a smooth progress of the marking exercise.
Unfortunately, despite responding to their initial demand, a few of the examiners yet again came up with a fresh call that the marking fee be revised upwards.
Since the issue of the examiner’s marking fee is an individual contract, and agreed to before reporting to a centre, the Council found it impossible to find an extra budget to revise the rates midway.
The Council, therefore, resolved to allow the examiners who were willing to continue with the marking process to do so uninterrupted.
Equally, those who wished to exit the marking exercise were allowed to do so without causing further interruptions to the process.
In the meantime, the Council has invited trained examiners from its database to ensure the smooth progress of the exercise.
The Council wishes to assure the country that the marking exercise is going on well and will be completed in time to ensure a timely release of the KCSE Examination.

Indeed life has become a challenge. Economically we are struggling. Everything has changed. As a council am not blaming you but you should listen to their cry and improve a bit even if not now! Atleast raise it a bit even 10%🙏
The statement released by the Knec chairman about why the teachers were protesting is misleading. Why would you replace the chief examiner if the grievance was just strictness? Its more then that. You are ready to dispense of a strict examiner and not adjust the renumeration ? Easy options are dangerous in an examination situation.

Why is this happening now?Us as parents are worried lot. What if the grudges are transferred to our children. You should have ensured the grudges are well addressed.
Comment Text* it is unfortunately that hearing of strict marking for cre pp1 while the answers can’t be the same knec should take immediate actions against chief examiner
Are assistant teachers also transferred
Nevertheless let the students script be marked without any grudges nor emotions.
Equalise marking rate for all no difference betweenCRe And other subjects because they live under same conditions and environment.
This is too embarrassing to students because of this interruption on marking exam
We wish the exercise is complete so that our children relax their brain after the long stress
The KNEC statement is self defeating and a display of lack of competence in managing its staff.
