The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched a free online training program for senior school teachers on Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).
The training is accessible via the Educational Assessment Resource Centre (EARC) portal.
Teachers interested in participating can access the training by visiting https://cbalms.knec.ac.ke/ and following the steps.
The first step is to sign up on the homepage, complete the registration form, navigate to My courses to access the Course Catalogue, and select the senior school course, then click the “Subscribe” button to enrol and start the training by following the sequential learning path.
The program is self-paced and designed to be sequential, requiring teachers to complete one unit before progressing to the next.
KNEC says this approach ensures educators acquire all the necessary skills to effectively implement Competency-Based Assessment at the senior school level.
The free training is part of KNEC’s ongoing efforts to enhance teacher capacity and support the nationwide rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
This initiative is designed to equip educators with the practical skills needed to implement CBA effectively, addressing a critical gap in the CBC rollout.
For school administrators and teachers, this training offers a cost-free opportunity to build capacity while ensuring students receive quality education aligned with the new curriculum.
Understanding what the program offers and how to access it is essential for schools preparing for the 2026 transition.
By November 2025, only 52,452 teachers had been retrained in CBA, far below the projected requirement.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has identified an immediate shortage of 25,839 senior school teachers, creating a significant challenge for the smooth implementation of CBC.
KNEC’s senior school training follows the CBA framework and is delivered fully online through the KNEC portal, focusing on practical competencies teachers need to implement CBA effectively.
The training modules are organised to mirror the three senior school pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Creative & Performing Arts & Sports Science, ensuring teachers receive content relevant to their subject areas.
The curriculum covers assessment design and blueprinting, item writing and test development, rubric construction and moderation, portfolio management, psychometrics and quality assurance, and digital assessment tools.
Participants learn how to create assessments aligned with CBC outcomes, develop fair and consistent rubrics, manage continuous school-based assessment portfolios, ensure reliability and validity in marking, and use Learning Management Systems (LMS) for data capture and feedback.
This comprehensive training equips teachers with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for effective CBA implementation, helping schools prepare for a smooth transition in 2026.
