The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) has asked primary school headteachers to ensure Class 8 and Grade 4 scores have been uploaded to the online portal by today December 17th 2020.

Its CEO Mercy Karogo said the scores will allow Knec to process specific reports for each learner.

“I call upon Head teachers whose schools have not uploaded the scores for Grade 4 assessment to do so before 18th December 2020 to allow  KNEC  finalise on data processing and provide a similar report to schools,” she said through a circular sent to primary school headteachers.

This is the third and possibly last time Knec has extended deadline for submission of Grade 4 and Class 8 LCBE assessment scores.

Knec had set the deadline to December 8th but still most schools had not yet finished submitting the scores, this made Knec come up with a new deadline so as to allow schools avail their scores.

The assessments are aimed to establish learning gaps that may have been occasioned by the long  period of closure due to the COVID-19  Pandemic, with a view to inform  on  interventions to be put in place towards addressing the gaps.

The assessments are for primary school learners and Grade 4 rogether with Class 8 have sat theres as other classes are expected to take the assessments when schools fully reopen on January 4th.

Knec is expected to issues assessment time table for other classes which will resume learning early next month.

Teachers experienced technical issues during initial submission of Grade 4, Class 8 scores.

This made Knec devise a simpler method for availing the scores.

Knec acknowledged the frustrations teachers were going through through a circular to school administrators.

“It has come to the attention of KNEC that the uploading exercise has been faced with challenges, which have slowed the process of uploading,” Knec CEO Mercy Karogo had said through a circular.

Knec had provided two methods of capturing the scores but both met at online uploading which caused frustrations and despair among the tutors.

One method was to capture the scores offline through an excel sheet provided by the examiner online.

The excel sheet after filling the scores was supposed to be uploaded to the online portal provided by the examiner.

The other method was the online method where learners scores would be keyed in directly to the portal and which seemed to be simpler for most ICT gurus.

However Knec devised another method to ensure the scores reach them unaltered and on time.

It said schools should upload the dully filled excel file, that was downloaded from the KNEC  system, without real-time processing of scores.  

And that upon successful uploading, an auto-message will be sent to the schools informing them that “processing shall  be done within two (2) weeks“

To make things simple for schools Knec said schools which may have challenges in uploading the dully filled excel file, will attach the dully filled excel file downloaded from the KNEC system, and send to the following  KNEC e-mail address lcbe@knec.ac.ke. 

It said file shall be processed within two (2) weeks and feedback shall be given.

Schools which still face challenges while uploading the scores were told to contact their Sub county Directors of Education (as guided in the Guidelines of Administration of Assessments uploaded on the KNEC  portal), or contact KNEC directly  on these following numbers :

However the online system is now working fine and accepting scores without issues. Schools which have not submitted the scores can do that by midnight today when Knec deadline lapses.
