Unions report recommend reopening of schools and colleges after September

A report released in unison by several workers unions recommends reopening of schools earliest after September.

The report courtesy of Knut (Kenya National Union of Teachers), UASU (University Academic Staff Union), KNHRC (Kenya National Human Rights Commission), KMPDU (Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union) and FAWE (Forum for African Women Educationists in Kenya) recommends opening of schools and colleges after September since the modelling by the health experts shows the months of September and August being the deadliest over coronavirus estimating two hundred people dieng of the deadly covid19 disease.

The report further states that opening of learning institutions should be in phases and not rushed.

The report also recommends the national exams, KCPE and KCSE, be postponed to any dates between the month of January and March 2021.

The report comes at a time when the ODM leader Raila Odinga recommended opening of schools next year saying the lives of the pupils are more important and they can resit classes.

The taskforce charged with assessing and advising on school reopening is yet to release its final draft.
