No Dip. no Degree certificates to be issued in TSC P1 upgrading program

Primary school teachers selected to upgrade their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificates will not be issued with regular Diploma and Degree certificates that are issued in colleges and universities at the end of their training.

Instead the teachers will be issued with a Teacher Professional Development (TPD) certificate that will highlight key competencies attained.

A top TSC source says the programme primary objective is to instil key competencies to enable the teachers to handle junior school classes.

Teachers who will successfully complete the modules will get deployed to teach Grades 7, 8 and 9 learners.

The upgraded teachers will continue to teach primary school section even after getting deployed to junior schools.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers has previously pleaded with the Commission to retool primary school teachers and then allow them teach junior school classes.

TSC intends to deploy teachers who can teach areas which are currently experiencing shortage.

The Commission is currently grappling with a shortage of 72,422 teachers in junior schools.

Learning areas like Creative arts and Sports which comprise of Visual Art, Performing Art and Physical Education and Sports have dire teacher shortage.

TSC has not been able to fill the gap for these areas through recruitment as subject combinations like Music/any, P.E/any, Art & design/any and drawing & design/any combinations that can fit into Creative Arts and Sports learning area have very few teachers who are mainly employed by public and private secondary schools.

The programme sponsored by World Bank offers an opportunity for P1 teachers who scored quality KCSE grades but were unable to join universities due to various reasons to upgrade and earn promotion.

TSC already listed a total of 38,849 P1 teachers who it says are qualified for the upgrade programme.
