TSC mass deployment of P1 teachers to JSS to start in September

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has now turned to primary school teachers in addressing the mess in junior schools.

TSC plans to promote at least twenty thousand P1 teachers to serve at junior schools ahead of grade nine class next year.

The Commission will, on September this year, deploy PTE teachers with Diploma and Degree certificates to cover staffing gaps in grades 7, 8 and 9.

TSC has generated lists from its database per county containing names of P1 teachers with various Diploma and Degree certificates for deployment to grade nine.

TSC is currently in the process of collecting additional data for the teachers from Heads of Institutions (HOI’s) before documents verification and subsequent posting at the sub county level.

In an excel template TSC want primary school heads to provide the teachers KCSE mean grade, specialization e.g. BED ARTS,BED Primary option , BED SCIENCE, BED ECDE, BED SNE, Dip in education, Dip SNE, Dip ECDE as well as two teaching subjects with mean grade for those with secondary option.

Listed for deployment are also senior, deputy and headteachers. Currently TSC is facing staffing crisis in junior schools.

A plan to recruit 18,000 junior school intern teachers was disbanded after the Finance Bill 2024 was annulled by President William Ruto.

This means TSC will not have recruitment this year except replacements following the budget cuts by the Treasury.

There are serious teacher shortage in grade seven and eight and the cornered TSC has no option but to turn to P1 teachers to address the looming crisis.

TSC has lowered the requirements to teach in junior school with teachers possessing diploma and degree in primary option, ECDE and SNE included for deployment.

Previously teachers were required to have degree in secondary option with C+ in KCSE as well as C+ in the two teaching subjects for deployment to junior school.

Below is a memo that was released by TSC to guide the process of data collection for teachers listed for deployment.
