Ministry releases fresh circular guiding junior school co-curricular activities

RE:  INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR JUNIOR SCHOOL CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2024 CALENDER ACTIVITIES

The Ministry of Education has released co-curricular activities calendar of events for 2024 where Junior School is a stand-alone event.

The junior school is domiciled in the primary school Sub- sector and the primary schools headteachers are currently the custodians of the funds to facilitate the  implementation and coordination of  the activities.

The Junior Schools will participate in the following activities in 2024 calendar.

Term I: Athletics. Cross country, Handball, Swimming and Basketball 5×5. Term II: Soccer. Volleyball, Basketball 3×3 and Netball.

The current Kenya Primary School Sports Association Committees will manage the transition process and together with the Field Education offices at each level will provide coordination and support including provision of technical officials, referees and umpires.

The purpose of this circular is to bring to your attention the regulations applicable for 2024 Junior School Co-Curricular co-ordination and management as shown below:

1. The Subcounty Directors of Education to nominate some caretaker committee members from the current elected and serving sub county Kenya primary schools sports association committee to manage the activities while SCDE does oversight and coordination at the Sub-County level.

2. The County Director of Education to nominate some caretaker committee members from the current elected and serving County Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association Committee to manage the Activities while COE does oversight and coordination at the County level.

3. The Regional  Director of Education  to  nominate  some  caretaker  committee members from the current elected and serving regional Kenya  Primary Schools Sports Association Committee  to  manage the activities while the RDE does oversight and coordination at the regional  level.

4. The  Director  Field  Coordination  and Co-Curricular Activities  to coordinate the activities in conjunction with the Kenya Primary Schools sports association at the National level.

The SCDEs, CDEs and RDEs are advised  to select from the serving officials separate for each activity since primary and junior activity will  run concurrently in two different venues that is in Nyeri and Machakos respectively.

The Nationals  for junior School term I games are scheduled for April in Machakos County in Eastern Region as per the calendar of events released on 23rd November 2023.

The Regional Directors, County Directors and Sub-County Directors should ensure the incorporation of teachers managing Junior school as officials of the activities such as team managers, coaches.  chaperons and the referees alongside the primary and secondary school teachers and officials.

The Ministry will provide guidance on the constitution of the committees through elections based on a junior school co-curricular  activities constitution that is work In progress  to be operationalized from  2025 calendar year.

Regional Directors of Education (RDEs), County Directors of Education (CDEs) and Sub County Directors of Education (SCDEs) are asked to bring to the attention of respective stakeholders In co-curricular activities these interim guidelines.
