Primary headteachers are now salivating for confirmation as Junior Secondary School (JSS) Principals amid end of their one year contract with Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The P1 headteachers were issued with deployment letters by the Commission to act as JSS Principals for a period of one year from 1st January to 30th December 2023.
Now the headteachers want TSC to confirm them through promotion to head the Grade 7, 8 and 9 section.
Yesterday Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu revealed that TSC has started the process to promote teachers who have stagnated in the same grade.
Machogu noted that among those to be promoted are primary school head teachers to the principal level, given that the Junior Secondary schools are domiciled in their institutions.
“All P1 teachers heading primary schools will be promoted from grade C3 and above as principals of Junior Secondary Schools,” he said.
Addressing the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (Kepsha) conference in Mombasa, during their 20th anniversary, the CS said most of the head teachers in primary schools are graduates who deserve promotion.
He commended head teachers who have PhD in various education fields and asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to promote them as they had proved they were competent enough to do other jobs.
Machogu said this after Kepsha Chairman Johnson Nzioka paraded the head teachers who have been at the helm of various schools for many years.
“I want officials in my Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission to make sure these teachers with PhD are given jobs such as quality assurance, which the government has been looking for,” he said.
TSC is yet to give clear guidelines on how the junior school section will be headed. The schools are currently lacking a permanent Principal, Deputy Principal, Senior Masters among others.
Previously TSC had said only teachers with qualifications to head secondary schools will be allowed to head junior secondary schools.
MoE & TSC crushing policies. Education still in a mix.Drama continues
Please take JSS Out of primary school it is a total mess.
Just take JSS OUT OF primary school
How can p1 holders manage graduates?
These are competent beings far much better than even those who think have degrees.
How can an UNDERGRADUATE head graduates? It would be the worst education system. TSC SHOULD USE THE SAME CRITERIA THEY USE TO DEPLOY PRIMARY TEACHERS TO JSS. PERIOD. This is EDUCATION NOT POLITICS. EDUCATION NEEDS QUALITY. THOSE WHO DON’T QUALIFY SHOULD BE OUT OF OFFICE AS EARLY AS 2022.
