Junior secondary school which involves Grade 7, 8 and 9 will have its own Principal, Deputy Principal and teachers.
During a State House meeting led by President William Ruto, it was agreed that for a start junior secondary section will be domiciled inside primary schools.
However later the institutions will be standalones with own Principal, teachers and Board of Managements (BOM).
“Junior secondary school is secondary, only that they will share a compound with the primary school. It will have its own teachers and later even its own principal, when properly constituted,” a source in the meeting said.
During the meeting it was also agreed that because the junior secondary school curriculum is secondary, only teachers with qualifications to teach secondary schools will be posted.
Although the learners in junior secondary school will be hosted in primary schools, the curriculum is essentially for secondary school.
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to employ 30,000 teachers by January 2023.
Both primary and secondary school teachers will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms as well as on internship terms.
The parties agreed that because the junior secondary curriculum is secondary, during the recruitment of the 30,000 teachers, priority will be given to unemployed teachers who have qualifications to teach in secondary schools.
However many teachers both Diploma and Degree secondary school teachers will be employed on internship terms.
In May this year TSC retooled a total of 60,000 secondary school teachers on junior secondary. The teachers were drawn from both public and private institutions including special need institutions.
TSC targets to train a total of 116,024 teachers on junior secondary curriculum. TSC is currently in a rush to start training of Grade 7 teachers by January.
The Commission targets to train teachers on Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects.
The training of Grade 7 teachers will involve these subjects and areas offered in junior secondary school section.
i. Languages – English, Kiswahili, Foreign and Indigenous Languages and Kenya Sign Language.
ii. Pure Sciences -Integrated Science Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Health Education.
iii. Applied Sciences – Agriculture, Home science and computer studies
iv. Mathematics.
iv. Humanities – Social Studies (Citizenship, Geography, History) Religious Studies, (CRE, IRE, Hindu, HRE and PPI) and live skills.
v. Technical subjects and Creative Arts – Pre vocational and pre career Business studies, music, sports and physical education Home science.

Combination of teaching subjects for secondary school teachers to be demoted to grade 7 to 9 could be a challenge. New subjects in CBC were not taught to then as they persued degree. Let primary school teachers who are used to teaching everything to continue with their grade 7 learners. Moreover, they used to handle then in grade 6
