Teachers risk a fine of sh 2,000 from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for failing to file their itax returns on time.

The exercise is complicated by the latest exercise launched by their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

TSC through circular number 6/2022 dated 8th June 2022 ordered its teachers to update their TPAY profile by 15th July 2022 to help enhance the security of their information in the portal.

The Commission has blocked teachers who have not updated their details from accessing various TPAY services which include downloading p9 form which helps in filing returns.

TSC further warned that teachers including school heads will not access TPAY portal if they fail to comply.

“Heads of institution who will not have validated the particulars of teachers under their supervision within the stipulated time will not be able to access their TPAY accounts,” says TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia through the circular.

According to KRA filing of returns must be done by 30th June 2022 after which a penalty will be imposed.

This will not be possible if teachers cannot access their p9 forms which helps in filing the returns.

The Commission has been in the process of enhancing security features of its various systems.

Among them is the TPAY system that handles Teachers and Secretariat Pay slips, P9 statements, Control sheets, Third Party transactions, application and approval of Loans process.

Users of the system have faced security challenges in the past where fraudsters have used details of legit users of the system to gain access into the system.

To curb this, the Commission has enhanced security by introducing a two level authentication process, where One Time Pin (OTP) is sent to the user’s registered phone number or Email to enable them log in.

Secondly, the user’s passport size photograph is to be updated in the TPAY user profile for purposes of identification.

This feature comes in handy as it shall assist the financial institutions in physical identification of the applicants on financial services as legitimate users and owners of the TPAY accounts.

Teachers are currently experiencing problems updating their profiles. This is due to some lacking official TSC email address.

Others have forgotten their emails while some cant seem to get their OTP codes sent to their emails and phones.

The profile validation exercise which started on 9th June 2022 will end on 15th July 2022.
