The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officially launched the training of 60,000 secondary school teachers on Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
The event which took place at Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Nairobi, was led by TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia and was attended by various top education and teachers union officials.
Dr Macharia was joined by Director KISE Dr Norman Kiogora, KICD CEO Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu, KUPPET Deputy Secretary General Moses Thurima, KESSHA Chairman Indimuli Kahi and CEMASTEA Director Jacinta Akatsa.
The Commission targets to train a total of 116,024 teachers this year in preparation for January roll out of grade 7 classes.
Macharia said by January 2023 there will be no gap in implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) because all secondary school teachers will have been trained.
The training will begin with Master Trainers who will then train the Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) physically for 4 days.
TSC has already listed teachers per sub county who will serve as Trainers of Trainers.
The Trainers of Trainers will train regular teachers at the Sub County level and the SNE teachers at the county level.
The target group for the training will be all the teachers handling grades 7, 8 and 9 from both public (regular and SNE) and private schools.
The first level of training will target teachers of Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects.
The teachers will be clustered according to departments. Secondary schools will each nominate 6 teachers drawn from Languages, Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Technical subjects to participate in the training.
The target Teachers will be grouped as follows;
i. Languages – English, Kiswahili, Foreign and Indigenous Languages and Kenya Sign Language.
ii. Pure Sciences -Integrated Science Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Health Education.
iii. Applied Sciences – Agriculture, Home science and computer studies iv. Mathematics.
iv. Humanities – Social Studies (Citizenship, Geography, History) Religious Studies, (CRE, IRE, Hindu, HRE and PPI) and live skills.
v. Technical subjects and Creative Arts – Pre vocational and pre career Business studies, music, sports and physical education Home science.
