Fate of 17 KCPE class hangs as teachers fail to report over salary

The fate of 263 pupils including 17 KCPE candidates in a school run by a government agency is uncertain after teachers declined to report back.

The 14 teachers are protesting non-payment of salaries since January 2020.

Fluorspar Day and Boarding Primary School in Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet County, was a private institution owned by the Kenya Fluorspar Company which stopped mining in 2016.

Ownership was transferred to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining after Kenya Fluorspar Company abandoned it as it wound up operations, according to education officials.

The Ministry of Education says the primary school, which is located in Kimwarer, is a private institution.

A day after schools across the country reopened after a nine-month break occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, Fluorspar Primary School was still engulfed in confusion.

Pupils and their parents were shocked after discovering that none of the institution’s teachers had reported on Monday.

Hosea Toroitich, the school’s Parents Association chair said the fate of 17 KCPE candidates registered by the institution is uncertain.

All students went back home on Monday. He said the teachers said they will only return when they receive their salaries for the past one year.

Kituyi Masibo, the county director of education said the process to convert the school to a public institution has started.
