The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia says that the Commission plans to promote a total of 36,829 teachers from next week.
Of these 10,833 are primary school teachers who will be promoted through deployment to teach in junior secondary school (JSS) section.
She said the promotions will be effected from Monday since the identified candidates have met the requisite qualifications for deployment.
While appearing before the National Assembly’s Education Committee chaired by Hon Julius Melly (Tinderet), Macharia told MPs that TSC was currently mapping the teachers after they applied for promotion through its online platform.
“The mapping process of primary school teachers eligible to teach in junior secondary schools is a continuous process and verification of the mapped files is still ongoing to identify more teachers eligible to be posted to junior secondary schools,” she told legislators.
However Macharia who was accompanied by TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi and other commissioners, says so far they have identified 7,282 teachers for deployment.
“The country needs to know if there are any plans to promote teachers currently teaching in primary schools and deploy them to Junior Secondary Schools. And if yes, what is the number of tutors that will be elevated ?” posed the Committee Chairperson.
“TSC has through the verification of personal files; identified 7,282 primary school teachers with requisite qualifications to teach in secondary schools as eligible for deployment to Junior Secondary Schools,” responded Ms Macharia.
According to the commission, qualification for deployment to JSS include a Diploma in Education, Bachelor’s degree in Education, at least a C+(Plus) mean grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE) examination or its equivalent and at least C+ (Plus) in the two teaching subjects at KCSE or its equivalent.
At university, one must have studied at least eight units in each of the two teaching subjects.
P1 teachers with Degree will move at job grade C2 while those with Diploma will move at job grade C1. The teachers will move to next job group automatically after completing three years.
Macharia said the teachers will help reduce the teaching load currently causing headache in public junior secondary schools.
“While the teacher establishment for Grade Seven level is 61,000 (at least two teachers per class), the commission had recruited 30,550 teachers (one teacher per class), bringing the teacher shortage at Grade Seven to 30,550.” said Macharia.
The Committee is scheduled to have another meeting with the Commission officials today Thursday to consider the Supplementary Budget estimates for the 2022/2023 financial year.
🙏🙏🙏
TSC could have taken all teachers with diploma and degree so long as they did secondary option and passed the two teaching subjects irrespective of the grade C plain they scored at KCSE.
Good contributions noted but what of PTE teachers who joined college with C-, and D+ and managed to upgrade based on diploma, degree n masters .TSC should consider teachers who we’re employed as back as 1996.
Tsc should also consider p1 teachers with degree in primary option and C+ and above in kcse
They should consider all teachers who have upgraded their certificates
You’re doing a good job, kindly update the schemes of work to fit the 2023 academic calendar of 13 weeks.
Thanks
P1 teachers with degrees should be considered first irrespective of C+ grades in kcse,
TSC should deploy all the primary teachers with degrees and diplomas be it in secondary option, ECD and SNE to JSS. These teachers’ efforts deserve to be recognized, they can be in -serviced coz the JSS curriculum is not a secondary thing per se…it’s a mixture of primary, secondary and TVET
TSC need to consider other qualifications such as diploma in ecde with p1 or p1 with c plain and c+ in any two subjects otherwise the underated p1 teachers have all the methodologies required to handle junior secondary.
Paul anereo egas
All those P1 teachers with additional qualifications can handle this so-called JSS! I can’t understand why the TSC keep on underrating their qualifications!
PTE teachers who upgrade should be considered
Kindly promote all teachers who have upgraded irrespective of c+
Yes,TSC, under it’s current leadership has decided to help the take off of JSS.If Dr.N.Macharia takes the route to promote teachers to JSS regardless of the O’level grade then I see JSS picking up tremendously by beginning of term two.
I know what colleague teachers seriously long for, PROMOTION,that can drop a coin in their pockets.Teachers across the country are a hard working personel even at their lowest financial status, they will not let go learners untaught because of the fault of the government through their employer. They always put the learners as a priority way above their personal interest.it is out of this that they will let go their domestic engagements to serve the Kenyan children.
Motivate Teachers through promotions rightly and enhance the government education policies in totality.
TSC should consider teacher’s who scored a mean grade C plain,..but got a diploma or a degree in secondary option 2 teaching subjects,..they got the methodology required…
They should consider all degrees not only those in secondary. We have put effort to upgrade, some even have masters, will they be locked out simply because they didn’t attain a c+.please reconsider
It’s unfair to find the recently employed teachers being better paid than the experienced p1 teachers who are qualified to teach.
We are the ones orientating the well paid teachers.
Hii deployment ifanywe tuwe at least kama wao.
Monday gone no communication from tsc what’s wrong up there?
Who will fight for teachers who did diploma in education secondary option with a C plain? Why is it so hard for Nancy Macharia to consider all teachers and give them equal chances??
TSC and Dr.Nancy should consider promoting ALL qualified teachers from primary who have upgraded their papers.
TSC and Dr.Nancy should consider promoting ALL qualified teachers from primary who have upgraded their papers.
Promote all teachers with diplomas and degrees ,what’s wrong with you Nancy Macharia
