The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) says plans to promote P1 teachers to junior secondary are in advanced stage.
The Commission will promote graduate teachers from primary schools to teach in Junior Secondary School (JSS) as part of addressing the current shortage.
TSC said that it was currently collecting applications’ from the qualified teachers before mapping out where they would be posted.
This came as the Commission announced that all the 30,550 newly employed teachers had reported to the JSS for the first term.
In the last one week, public schools have been hit by an acute shortage of teachers as thousands of students transitioned from primary school to JSS.
TSC CEO Nancy Macharia admitted that there was a shortage of teachers in JSS but was quick to add that the government was looking into the issue.
She said that the commission was using its portal to collect applications from graduate teachers currently working in primary schools.
“We shall use the data collected to transfer the qualified teachers from primary schools to junior secondary schools once we are done with the mapping,” she said.
The application exercise ran till 6th February 2023 midnight when it closed.
Macharia added that the recently recruited teachers had reported to the JSS terming the current shortage as ‘teething-challenges’ during the transition.
The CEO was addressing the press at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha after meeting members of the Senate committee on education.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION FOR DEPLOYMENT
1. At least a C+ (Plus) mean grade at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent
2. At least grade C+ (Plus) in the two teaching subjects at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent
3. At least 8 Units in each of the two teaching subjects
4. Must be serving as a primary school teacher under TSC
Macharia revisited the issue of delocalization adding that over 14,000 teachers had been affected adding that TSC had considered the issue of equity during the transfers.
On his part, the chairman of the senate committee Joseph Nyuthu termed the shortage of teachers in JSS as worrying and challenged the State to intervene.
The Murang’a Senator noted that the issue could get worse next year when the second cohort of students joined JSS where there was already a crisis.
“The government should move fast and hire more teachers in JSS as this crisis could worsen come next year when more students join junior secondary schools,” he said.
The Senator revisited the proposal by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to slash the salaries of ECDE teachers terming this as an abuse to the education sector.
He said the Senate would push for an allocation of Sh2B for every county every financial year to deal with the issue of ECDE and Vocational Training Centres.
Nyutu noted that the proposal by SRC did not make sense adding that this could affect the morale of the education stakeholders.
“We reject in totality the proposal by SRC to slash the salaries of ECDE teachers as this is an abuse to the education sector,” he said.
She should hurry this up cos P1 teachers are misused by being forced to handle JSS despite the fact that TSC has categorically stated that they will never teach in JSS.
I am eagerly waiting for the deployment.
I am making a humble appeal to the tsc to kindly post the delocalised teachers in the counties of their choice.
It’s quite demotivating to find teachers who had stayed for less than 5 years being transferred but those who have completed the 5 years and having health issues with all evidence being left languishing in stress and anxiety!!
What criteria was tsc using kindly with all respect and humility??????
I am just wondering……must a sick teacher be carried in a wheelchair to tsc headquarters as evidence for the officials to approve and transfer him/ her?
It’s really painful and content delivery almost impossible!!!
Mungu awapatie hekima wale ambao wanahusika katika hizi transfers because it seems humanity no longer exists😭😭
Earnestly waiting
Not even one teacher was transferred from Coast region to Eastern region. I wonder why!
It’s not practical for TSC to allocate one teacher per school to handle JSS pupils. Some schools have 8 streams. How can One teacher handle 8 Streams?
Eagerly waiting
Hope they will employ teachers who are yet to graduate
Waiting patiently
What is tsc doing after receiving teachers’ credentials online? Where is verification of documents going to take place, work discount or preferred subcounty? Nimechoka kungoja.
What about the hyped CBC upgrade teachers?
Some teachers took diploma with c plain but had c+ in their two teaching subjects in 2009-2013.By then universities were admitting.what is their eternal ruling
TSC and the government of Kenya should listen to advices because:how will a bio chemistry teacher handle jss grade seven??
Most of the teachers recruited recently for jss high school teachers are not conversant with most of the learning areas. In short vacancies that were meant for P1 teachers were transferred to High school teachers.Tuko kwa ground and we are seeing
Tumengojea kwa hamu na ghamu
Let’s be patient……there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
P1 teachers with C plain in KCPE and C+ in teaching subjects should be considered
we expect the teachers of primary to teach these learners they are suffering…..when will the lessons and syllabus be completed.
Those who did degree primary option are the best to handle JSS. Wish tsc knew this.
I wonder whether TSCis is aware that some 8-4-4 candidates took 10 subjects at KCSE. Logically and practically, is Mean C+ from 7 subjects equal to Mean C+ from 10 subjects? The student who were examined in 10 subjects had more workload and the total score had a greater denominator to be divided by.
