Protests erupt after shooting of Kibabii university student

Residents of Namanjala in Kwanza constituency, Trans Nzoia, on Friday engaged police in running battles after a university student was shot dead during a crackdown on illicit liquor.

Eugene Sebastian, a second year student at Kibabii University, was reportedly shot by police officers on Thursday night.

The deceased, according to his father, left the house to go and lock their dogs in the kennel when he was killed.

The area residents blocked police officers from taking the body of the deceased saying they were waiting for officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to ascertain that the death was caused by use of unnecessary force by the men in blue.

Trans Nzoia Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng said investigations into the incident have since begun.

Three years ago, five people were shot dead by police and four others left injured in the same area; the victims’ families are still looking for justice as nothing has ever been done.
