Shock and grief engulfed Kachieng village in Homa Bay county after a class seven pupil was buried while harvesting sand on Monday morning.
Steven Ochieng, a pupil at Apuko DOH Primary School was part of team of several others who were excavating sand for sale.
Area Chief Damianus Osano said the minor was buried by loose soil that collapsed from the quarry’s wall on account of heavy rains.
The debris from the collapsed on the minor, trapping him and cutting him off from the rest of his team.
The administrator added that several others who were harvesting sand in a different cave raised alarm but it was too late.
Further, the administrator asked locals to stay away from illegal sand harvesting and warned parents against subejcting their kids to child labour.
The minor’s body was removed to the to Kendu Adventist Hospital Mortuary.
