Wilson Sossion Among 33 Shortlisted as TSC Commissioner Interviews Commence

High-Stakes Selection: Interviews for New TSC Commissioners Kick Off

NAIROBI, Kenya — The race to fill two vacant positions at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has entered a critical phase, with a selection panel commencing formal interviews for shortlisted candidates.

The exercise, which runs from Tuesday, June 2, to Friday, June 5, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for the Commission as it navigates significant institutional reforms.

The Selection Process

A selection panel, inaugurated by the government, is overseeing the recruitment to find replacements for two commissioners whose six-year terms concluded in early May 2026.

The panel, chaired by Ambassador Isaac Njenga, is tasked with identifying suitable candidates who can uphold the Commission’s mandate of managing teacher recruitment, deployment, and discipline.

Among the 33 candidates shortlisted for the interview process is Wilson Sossion, the former Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and a former nominated Member of Parliament.

A Commission in Transition

This recruitment drive comes at a time of significant leadership realignment within the TSC.

The Commission is currently handling major national initiatives, including the full-scale implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and ongoing efforts to rationalize teacher staffing across the country.

Parallel to the search for new commissioners, the TSC has seen recent changes at the executive level:

New Vice Chairperson: On May 21, 2026, the Commission appointed Sharon J. Kisire as its new Vice Chairperson, succeeding Leila Ali Abdi.

Kisire, who has served as a Commissioner since 2021, brings extensive experience in human resources and governance to the role as she supports Chairperson Jamleck Muturi in steering the Commission’s strategic policy direction.

CEO Tenure: The Commission is also anticipating a transition regarding its leadership, as acting CEO Eveleen Mitei reaches the end of her maximum allotted tenure in June 2026.

As the selection panel concludes its interviews this week, the successful nominees will be forwarded to the President for appointment, filling a vital gap in the oversight of Kenya’s education sector.

Stakeholders are watching closely, as these new appointments will play a decisive role in shaping teacher management policies during the implementation of key educational reforms.
