TSC Wraps Up Primary School Teachers’ Promotion Interviews, Secondary and CSO Interviews Set for Thursday

TSC Promotion Interviews: Primary Exercise Ends as Secondary Teachers and CSOs Take Centre Stage

Nairobi, September 15, 2026 — The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has today, 15th September 2026, concluded promotion interviews for primary school teachers across the country, marking the end of the first phase of the 2026 promotion cycle.

The Commission is now set to roll out the second phase, targeting secondary school teachers, Teacher Training College (TTC) tutors, and Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), beginning on Thursday.

According to reports from various promotion venues, the exercise was largely smooth, with no major incidents recorded in most centres.

Teachers who attended the interviews were commended for their orderly conduct, a factor that TSC officials say contributed significantly to the timely completion of the primary school phase.

Shortlisted candidates were notified through SMS, with some regions supplementing this with email notifications. Successful applicants were also issued with formal invitation letters detailing the venue, date, and time of their respective interviews, as well as the documents they were required to carry along.

Massive Vacancy Advertisement Drives the 2026 Cycle

The current promotion exercise follows the Commission’s advertisement of 34,016 teacher promotion vacancies, spanning job groups C2 to D5. This places the 2026 cycle among the more expansive promotion drives undertaken by TSC in recent years, cutting across both classroom teaching grades and senior administrative positions in schools and the wider teaching service.

The vacancies span 30 distinct job designations, reflecting a structural spread that runs from foundational promotional tiers for classroom teachers all the way up to the pinnacle of administrative leadership within the teaching service.

This tiered structure was designed to ensure that teachers at different career stages — from those seeking their first promotion out of entry-level grades to senior administrators eyeing top leadership roles — have a clear and defined pathway.

Applications for the advertised positions closed on 10th August 2026, after which the Commission proceeded to shortlist candidates based on set criteria before rolling out the interview schedule region by region and county by county.

Primary School Interviews: A Six-Day Exercise

Interviews for primary school teachers kicked off on 8th September 2026 and ran for six days, concluding today. The exercise was decentralized, with field directors at the regional and county levels taking charge of the process in their respective jurisdictions.

This approach allowed TSC to run interviews simultaneously in multiple centres across the country, significantly cutting down the time that would otherwise have been required had the process been centralised.

The primary school phase prioritized foundational promotional tiers, meaning that classroom teachers seeking their initial promotions, as well as those eyeing entry and mid-level administrative responsibilities such as senior teacher and deputy head teacher positions, were given priority in this first batch.

This structured sequencing is consistent with TSC’s broader strategy of clearing promotions from the lower rungs of the teaching service before addressing more senior and specialised positions.

Feedback from the field indicates that the exercise proceeded without major disruptions. Panels in most counties reported full attendance by shortlisted candidates, and the orderly manner in which teachers presented themselves for their respective interview slots was widely noted by TSC officials overseeing the process.

What Comes Next: Secondary, TTC, and CSO Interviews

With the primary school phase now behind it, the Commission turns its attention to the second and more elaborate phase of the 2026 promotion cycle. Interviews for post-primary school teachers — comprising secondary school teachers and TTC tutors — together with CSOs, are scheduled to run from Thursday, 17th September, through 25th September 2026, a seven-day exercise.

Unlike the primary school phase, which was largely delegated to field directors, the post-primary and CSO interviews will be spearheaded by the Director of Staffing at TSC headquarters, working alongside regional, county, and sub-county directors.

This heightened level of coordination reflects the more complex nature of the positions under consideration at this stage, many of which involve senior administrative and specialised curriculum support roles.

The seven-day window allocated for this phase is longer than the six days used for primary school interviews, an indication of the larger number of designations and the broader geographical and institutional spread involved in interviewing secondary school teachers, TTC tutors, and CSOs.

Documents Required During Promotion Interviews

As part of the interview process, TSC has issued a detailed list of documents that teachers are required to present at the interview venue. The Commission has, however, clarified that the exact number of documents required varies depending on the nature of the promotion vacancy being sought.

Classroom teachers applying for lower-tier promotions are generally required to present fewer documents compared to those seeking higher administrative positions such as headship or senior curriculum support roles.

The documents required during the interviews include:

  1. Original Identity Card (ID)
  2. Original academic certificates (KCSE, PTE, Diploma, Degree, and Master’s certificates)
  3. Letter of appointment to the current grade
  4. Latest TSC payslip
  5. Last promotional letter
  6. Letter assigning responsibility of Head of Institution (HOI), Deputy Head of Institution (DHOI), or Senior Teacher
  7. Performance appraisal reports (TPAD) for the last three years, namely 2023, 2024, and 2025
  8. Evidence of professional engagement, such as participation in TSC’s Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) programme, Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) training, Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) training, service as a county trainer, Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) examiner or item developer, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) panelist or book evaluator, or recognition as an author or champion in various educational initiatives
  9. Evidence of engagement in co-curricular activities at the sub-county, county, regional, national, or international level

Candidates seeking promotion to senior administrative and leadership positions are expected to present a more comprehensive dossier of these documents, given the additional scrutiny that accompanies such roles, while those seeking classroom-based promotions will generally present a shorter, more streamlined set.

Documents Required After Successful Interviews

Beyond the documents required during the actual interview session, TSC has also outlined a separate list of clearance documents that will only be required from teachers who are successfully shortlisted following the promotion interviews.

These documents are not needed on the day of the interview itself but will be submitted at a later stage as part of the vetting process before a successful candidate is formally confirmed for promotion.

The post-interview clearance documents include:

  1. A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
  2. A Clearance Certificate from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
  3. A Tax Compliance Certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
  4. Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)
  5. A Clearance Certificate from an approved Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)

This layered vetting process — combining an in-person interview with subsequent background and compliance checks — is consistent with the Commission’s broader effort to ensure integrity and accountability in the promotion of teachers to positions of greater responsibility within the teaching service.

A Structured Rollout Across the Country

Taken together, the 2026 promotion cycle illustrates a carefully sequenced rollout: primary school teachers first, followed by secondary school teachers, TTC tutors, and CSOs.

The involvement of regional, county, and sub-county directors at every stage, coupled with oversight from the Director of Staffing during the more senior-level interviews, points to a coordinated national effort to clear the backlog of promotion vacancies within a compressed timeframe.

With the primary school phase now complete and having proceeded largely without incident, attention now shifts to Thursday, when the more extensive second phase begins.

Given the scale of the exercise — covering 34,016 vacancies across 30 job designations and job groups C2 to D5 — the coming days are expected to be a busy but closely monitored period for TSC, regional and county education offices, and the thousands of teachers whose career progression hinges on the outcome of these interviews.

Teachers awaiting their turn in the upcoming phase have been advised to keep track of communication from TSC, particularly SMS and email notifications, and to ensure they have all the required documents ready ahead of their scheduled interview dates between 17th and 25th September 2026.
