TSC readies early October salaries for teachers ahead of national exams

Teachers will get their October salaries unusually early. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has already closed the October payroll to start the salary processing and wiring into teachers accounts.

The payroll closed in the morning hours of 15th October, 2025. Payment of salaries early means teachers will be able to attend to their invigilation and supervision roles assigned in various exam centres.

Those not taking part in administration of exams and assessments will be able to use their salaries to travel to their homes to start the long holiday.

Teachers will be invigilating and supervising the KPSEA, KJSEA and KCSE exams with rehearsals set to start this week on 17th October for KCSE exams.

They will require transport fares to take them to the exam centres. Knec does reimburse for this expense but only after conclusion of the exams and assessments.

This is done after the national exams have been administered, marked and results released to the public.

The early payroll closure is also a reaction to an order by the Head of Public Service, Mr Felix Koskei, who directed all government agencies including TSC to submit payrolls to the National Treasury by the 20th of every month.

In a circular dated 24th June 2025, Koskei ordered all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and County Governments to process and finalize their monthly payrolls by the 15th of every month.

“To further enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and integrity of the Government payroll management and to safeguard the timely remittance of all statutory deductions including but not limited to Pay As You Earn (PAYE), National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Higher Education Loan Board (HELB), National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), pension contributions, and Social Health Authority (SHA), the Government has revised the payroll procession and closure deadline to the 18th day of every month, effective immediately,” read the circular.

He said adherence to this revised schedule will facilitate the timely submission of exchequer requisitions to the National Treasury by the 20th of every month and to ensure that all public officers statutory deductions are up to date and active.

Previously teachers used to get salaries from 26th of every month. However there has been a paradigm shift following this new order.

Below are the salaries and allowances payable to teachers from job group B5 to D5 inline with CBA 2025 – 2029.
