The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has invited teachers uniuons for talks on their medical insurance cover.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has acknowledged the invitation by the Commission at Mombasa to iron out the challenges with the Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover.
This follows complaints from teachers piled after hospitals capped Outpatient at sh 1,200 per visit forcing teachers to pay out of pocket for their medical bills.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) had issued a seven day strike notice should TSC and Social Health Authority (SHA) fail to address their challenges.
There are a total of 413,577 teachers with their 807,426 dependents covered by Mwalimu Cover.
Teachers have been pushing for reinstatement of AON Minet cover after a series of challenges with SHA.
Opposition politician, Rigathi Gachagua, had accused the government for playing with the health of teachers.
Health CS Aden Duale had dismissed his claims saying the cover is the best compared to Minet.
“Rigathi Gachagua claims teachers in the new medical cover are limited to sh 1,200 daily. That is misleading. The reality is that the Mwalimu Cover under this administration is one of the most comprehensive health schemes in the public sector,” said Duale.
Teachers access has however been expanded from 800 facilities under Minet to 9,600 SHA facilities nationwide listed in public, private and faith-based hospitals.
