TSC gives unemployed teachers one week to register online

Unemployed teachers have one week to register their details online with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The Commission through a notice dated 4th March, started collection of details from the teachers in what it termed as its key constitutional mandate.

Quoting Article 237(2) and (3) of the Constitution, TSC says its obligated to register trained teachers, review their training, supply and demand and advise the national government on matters relating to the teaching profession.

The Commission has given the teachers till 16th March to ensure they have submitted their key details through an online platform.

The data collection exercise comes after a recent revelation by the TSC acting CEO, Eveleen Mitei, that primary schools have excess teachers.

Mitei said that primary schools across the country are currently overstaffed, a situation attributed to the recent restructuring of the basic education system.

According to the commission, the migration of Grade 7 and 8—formerly Class 7 and 8—to the junior secondary level left many primary institutions with more teachers than needed.

She noted that because of this shift, a surplus emerged in lower primary staffing, reducing the urgency to recruit additional primary school teachers.

As a result, the Commission announced it will no longer conduct large-scale recruitment for primary teachers, stating that it will only replace those who exit service through natural attrition.

Late last year TSC declared 7,065 replacement vacancies for primary schools to replace P1 teachers who exited service in 2025 through natural attrition.

Mitei however highlighted a severe shortage of teachers in both junior and senior school levels, saying it will continue prioritizing recruitment in these two segments to address rising learner populations and curriculum demands.

Her announcement came despite past assurances from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leadership that TSC will carry mass recruitment starting this year.

KNUT Secretary-General Collins Oyuu had told unemployed P1 teachers that during a State House visit, the union had reached an understanding with government to prioritize them in the next mass recruitment exercise.

However, the latest communication from TSC signals that while opportunities will continue to emerge, they will be significantly narrower for primary teachers compared to those targeting junior and senior school vacancies.

Education CS Julius Migos, already said that government will employ 16,000 intern teachers this year to support junior schools.

This data collection exercise has been interpreted as a way to address the unemployment facing thousands of primary school teachers.

The teachers who held protests last year, are looking forward for the Commission to address their plight.

Though TSC has records of teachers after registering and issuing them with TSC numbers, it says it requires additional details from the tecahers to support planning.

The required additional information includes; the teachers’ qualifications, subjects combination, and level of training.

“Teachers targeted for submission of this information should provide their details online at www.tsc.go.ke under “Online services menu, teacher profile update” and also available on https://tsconline.tsc.go.ke/profile/teacher-profile/ by 16th March, 2026 midnight,” said TSC in a notice.

Below is the notice by TSC that was sent to all unemployed teachers to take action.
