Primary headteachers start to admit posted JSS interns

Junior secondary school (JSS) and primary school intern teachers have started to trickle down to schools after they were issued with posting letters.

Today a good number of them were admitted by primary headteachers who are also acting junior secondary school Principals.

Those who reported had their online causalities filled and submitted to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to ensure prompt payment of salaries.

TSC is on the spot after it delayed paying salaries of the intern teachers posted in January. Many teachers had gone for months without getting their stipend amid rumours of a broke government.

Things have however stablised and TSC is expected to pay the recent posted intern teachers on time.

In July the commission invited applications from qualified candidates to fill 20,000 teacher internship posts.

The agency said 18,000 intern teachers will be posted to junior secondary schools while the remaining 2,000 will be deployed to primary schools to support the implementation of the new curricula.

The online applications ran for two weeks till 18th July when it closed.

The JSS intern teachers will be required to teach various learning areas under the curriculum and will be entitled to a monthly stipend of Sh20,000. Those who will teach in primary school will earn Sh15,000.

However the teachers will also face a number of deductions including sh 360 NSSF deduction, 1.5% House levy and NHIF.

The teachers will serve for a one year contract period which is renewable for another one year before being converted to permanent and pensionable terms.

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said the commission targets to employ at least 25,000 teachers per year for the next five years whenever funds are available.

The fate of the current serving intern teachers who were posted in January is still unknown. This is after TSC was not allocated funds in the July budget to confirm them in January 2024.
