P1 teachers cry as TSC fails to advertise for their employment

Unemployed primary school teachers are unhappy lot after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) failed to advertise for their recruitment in its recent advert.

In the advert released today, TSC seeks to fill 20,000 teacher internship posts in junior secondary schools (JSS) by 4th November 2024 application deadline.

Unlike in the previous recruitment adverts where primary school teachers were allocated some slots. In the current one its exclusively for JSS teachers.

The Commission has previously stated that it has excess teachers in primary schools following scrapping of two classes i.e Class 7 and 8.

TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said they have a total of 18,056 excess teachers in primary schools following the introduction of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) that reduced primary school classes from eight to six.

Last year TSC advertised 20,000 teacher internship jobs where 18,000 slots went to JSS and 2,000 slots were allocated to primary school teachers.

This financial year TSC is concerned with addressing the teacher shortage in junior secondary ahead of the Grade 9 class next year.

There are more than a hundred and fifty thousand primary school teachers yet to be employed by the TSC.

Some of the unemployed P1 teachers upgraded their Primary Teacher Education (PTE) certificates to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE).

A small number of primary school teachers are fresh graduates under the new DPTE course who were this year issued with their Knec certificates.

Below is the TSC advert that seeks to hire a total of 20,000 teachers on internship terms for one year contract.
