The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has urged public and private schools to submit the School Based Assessment (SBA) projects by end of July.
Schools are to submit Grades 3, 7 and 8 practical and project scores by 31st July 2025.
Knec had availed the assessment materials for the three grades early in May for schools to administer, score and upload scores on the online CBA portal.
Grade 3 learners did the Integrated Learning Assessment (ILA) which are a set of practical activities integrating all learning areas.
This years Grade 3 project theme was on ” health habits that promote individual and community wellbeing“.
Grade 7 and 8 had projects in Integrated Science, Agriculture and Nutrition, and Creative Arts and Sports.
Already projects for Grades 4 and 5 were submitted by schools. Knec had given schools till 31st May to upload the project scores.
Currently there are also projects ongoing for Grade 9 learners. The projects are inline with the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) 2025 timetable.
These are Pre-Technical Studies and Creative Arts and Sports projects. Schools had complained as Knec had only released Creative Arts and Sports project.
However Knec has last week released the Pre-Technical Studies project and schools are required to download, administer, score and upload scores by 30th August.
Unlike other Grades for Grade 9 Knec said public and private junior schools will bear the cost of late submission of the project scores.
Knec announced a penalty of sh 500 for schools that will fail to upload the KJSEA project scores on time.
Schools are required to download and administer the projects and performance tasks and upload scores of all learners within stipulated timeframes.
The first CBC cohorts will sit for their final assessment in junior school known as KJSEA from 27th October to 6th November 2025.
Knec outlined how learners score will count in primary and junior secondary before their transition to senior secondary.
Around two million were registered for KJSEA by March 2028. Primary headteachers submitted their KJSEA nominal rolls by 9th May to Knec through their sub county directors for preparations.
According to KNEC the learners will have School Based Assessments (SBA) which will contribute 20% of the total score.
The school based assessments will be done in Grade 7 and 8 and will make a total of 20%.
School based assessments are done each year in term two and term three. In term two the SBA comprise of projects and practicals while in term three SBA comprise of theory.
In primary school learners sit for their final assessment in Grade 6 called Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) before transitioning to junior secondary.
KPSEA will account for 20% of the total score. After KPSEA learners join junior secondary at Grade 7.
KJSEA will account for 60% of the total score. KNEC will use the 20% SBA score, 20% KPSEA score and 60% KJSEA score for placement of learners in senior secondary.
Placement will be based on pathways. In 2026 the pioneer CBC learners will transition to senior school for a three-year study period that will cover Grade 10, 11 and 12.
